Migraine and Headaches
Migraine and Headaches are said to negatively affect approximately half the UK’s population at least once each year. Although for most people who suffer from migraines, attacks occur on a monthly or even weekly basis.
Migraines are usually defined as a moderate or severe headache. Felt as a throbbing pain on one side of the head. People who suffer from migraines will often consistently report other additional symptoms. Such as increased sensitivity to light or possibly sound, nausea and in some cases actual vomiting.
It’s not surprising then that migraines can severely affect your quality of life and stop you carrying out your normal everyday activities. Consequentially as a coping strategy, many people express the need for bedrest. Often in a quiet darkened room until their symptoms pass. This may in some cases take days.
A number of effective treatments are available to reduce the symptoms and prevent reoccurring migraine attacks. Acupuncture and hands on “manual” physiotherapy treatment, by a skilled professional is a useful approach for relief from migraines and headaches.
Other types of commonly occurring headaches are due to stress and poor posture. Developing tension in the muscles and joints of the upper back, neck and shoulders. This in turn can lead to headaches. Typically, the pain throbs in the base of the skull, the crown of the head; sometimes pain flashes into the face, especially the forehead and behind the eyes. Additional teeth grinding or jaw clenching often causes head, face and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain.
Physiotherapy treatment – regimes exist involving manual therapy to treat the muscles and joints around the upper back and neck. Combined with postural correction, mobility and strengthening exercises. A method not only effective in eliminating your pain. But also empowering the individual to prevent reoccurring symptoms and control the headaches.
