TMJ - Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD)
The term temporomandibular dysfunction or TMD is given when loss of optimal mechanical function of the jaw or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) occurs. Frequently resulting in pain around the TMJ, ear, jaw bone, face and teeth. It also often manifests with headaches.
This painful syndromes’ origins arise from shortening of neck and cranial muscles. This in turn begins with poor neck and head posture, teeth grinding or jaw clenching (known as bruxism).
Other symptoms of TMD – These can be clicking or popping sound of the jaw while eating or yawning. The inability to fully open the mouth, a phenomenon known as “Close Lock”. Or conversely an “Open Lock” condition, locking of the jaw in a slightly open position. The inability to close the mouth completely as for example when we touch our teeth together.
TMJ Physio management of the TMD condition is a highly skilled and specialised area of clinical practice.
